Chinese Garden - Scholar's Courtyard
The owners of the gardens, on which Portland's garden is based, were scholars and incorporated intellectual pleasure to the garden experience, such as games and theatrical performances. The courtyard features a mosaic tile called "Plum Blossoms on Cracked Ice." A plum tree grows against the outside wall, and, in the late winter, its blossoms drop on the courtyard.
