Paulina Peak - Big Obsidian Flow

To the right of Paulina and East lakes you can see the Big Obsidian Flow. More than 170 million cubic yards of obsidian and pumice erupted from a vent of the Newberry Volcano only about 1,300 years ago, making this flow one of the youngest geological events in Oregon. Native Americans used the obsidian for glass trade and to create tools. A one-half mile interpretive trail guides visitors across a corner of the flow.
